Count the corrugations before anything else — one wave or two is readable at fifty metres, while the chevron colour pairing is the single fastest confirmation once you have a shortlist.

Read the barrier in this order.

Profile
Single-wave, double-wave or box-section beam. The corrugation shape is visible from a distance and is the first thing to fix.
Post design
Rectangular, I-beam or circular posts, each with its own spacing along the run.
Mounting height
How high the rail sits, and how much of the post is left exposed beneath it.
End treatments
How the barrier terminates — curved down into the ground, flared out, or capped. Often the most distinctive detail on the whole run.
Reflectors
Colour, shape and spacing of the reflective markers fixed to the rail.

Barriers on bridges and mountain roads are often more distinctive than barriers on flat highway, because they are built to different local specifications. If the round gives you a bridge parapet, read it before you read anything else.

Chevrons and bend markers

The boards on the outside of a curve that tell you which way it turns are surprisingly variable.

  • Colour combination: black on yellow, black on white, white on blue, red on white.
  • Number of chevrons per board.
  • Whether the boards are grouped in a run or stand singly.
  • Whether they sit on their own post or are bolted to the barrier.

Fencing

Agricultural and boundary fencing varies with what it is containing and what is available to build with locally.

Wire type
Plain wire, barbed, woven mesh or electric tape.
Post material
Timber, concrete, steel angle, or live hedging used as the post line itself.
Height and spacing
How tall the run stands and how far apart the posts are set.
Boundary type
Hedgerow versus fence versus stone wall versus ditch — a strong regional divide across Europe alone.

Dry stone walls in particular are a strong signal in a limited set of regions. When you see one, treat it as narrowing rather than decorative.

Kerbs and drainage

Look at the edge of the road where it meets the ground. It is in every urban frame you will ever be dropped into.

  • Raised kerbstones versus a flush shoulder.
  • Open drainage ditches versus covered drains.
  • Painted kerbs versus unpainted.
  • Cobbled gutters versus asphalt run straight to the edge.

All of these vary nationally, and none of them require you to find anything. They are already in the frame.
